About Ann Mitchell

About
I paint women who have lived.
From The Far Room, my studio in County Offaly, Ireland, I create contemporary figurative paintings in oil, gold leaf and mica.
I work slowly. Every painting is built in layers - painted, scraped back and rebuilt until the surface feels true. Gold leaf appears not as decoration, but as a symbol of repair. The marks beneath remain visible. Nothing is painted out completely.
I don't want to tell you who these women are or what they have lived through. I'd rather leave that space open. The rest belongs to you.
My current body of work, Her Skin. Her Armour., continues this exploration through layered surfaces, luminous colour and the quiet conversation between paint, memory and time.
My paintings are held in private collections across Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and France.
